NATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE FORUM (NYSF)

BACKGROUND

The National Youth Science Forum runs summer schools in January each year for high school students with a talent and passion for science. Students who have completed year 11 are exposed to professional scientists and engineers in a variety of laboratory and industry visits, hands-on experiments and video links to overseas facilities. They also take part in enrichment activities related to career and personal development. Most importantly, they meet with students who have the same goals and passions as they do.

There are approximately 400 positions each year for students from throughout Australia to attend 2 summer schools, which are held at the Australian National University in Canberra. District 9670 normally sends 17 students to these summer schools. There is also an annual opportunity to attend a summer school in New Zealand as well as summer schools overseas.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Application forms are sent to secondary schools in March each year from the NYSF office.  The online expression of interest form is available at www.nysf.edu.au from April 1st.  Prospective students should first register their interest online and then contact the district chair of the summer schools committee as well as local Rotary clubs.  Students should contact the district chair if they need help locating a Rotary club.

Schools and students have been advised that their nomination(s) should reach Rotary clubs by 30th June. Clubs should then interview students and nominate them for District Interview if they possess the necessary qualities required by the program.  Remember that applicants require leadership attributes, a well rounded suite of interests and activities as well as a notable interest in science.

The all-inclusive cost of the 12 day program is approximately $3000.  Rotary clubs are normally asked to help support up to 50% of this cost. To meet this cost, neighbouring clubs may wish to share the support for a student.  Families who are unable to meet the rest of the cost may apply to the Rotary district through the committee chair for additional support.
