YOUTH EXCHANGE PROGRAM (YEP) LONG TERM PROGRAM

Every year approximately 8,000 students aged 15 to 17 go abroad under the auspices of the Rotary Youth Exchange program for one academic year.

Rotary Youth Exchange students live with a host family in a country other than their own. They may learn a new language; they will learn a new way of living and a great deal about themselves. Exchange students are part of the ambassador team of Rotary International. The object of the program is to foster world peace and bring the world closer together.

So, each year, local Rotary districts and clubs worldwide arrange thousands of international Youth Exchanges for high school-aged students. It is standard practice for applicants interested in the program to be screened by using detailed applications and interviews. This process helps ensure that only highly responsible and mature students are sent on an exchange. Generally, students are selected based on the following criteria:
a..  Students should be in year 10 or year 11 in the year they make application
b..  Students must return to secondary schooling education on their return from the exchange
c..  Scholastic record
d..  Linguistic ability
e..  Community involvement
f..   Potential as a cultural ambassador
g..  Age requirement

Many Rotary Clubs in District 9670 are involved in the Youth Exchange Program. The selection of outgoing students generally commences in April each year. If you are interested in finding out more about this exciting ‘life changing’ experience, please contact the chairman of the District Committee.
