The Myall Melodians and the Rotary Club of Myall Coast have combined their resources to donate the substantial sum of $5,000 to the Tea Gardens-Hawks Nest Surf Lifesaving Club.
The cheques ($2,500 from each of the Melodians and Rotary) were presented to the Surf Club President, Steve Howell at the closing performance of the singing group’s series of concerts, “A Tapestry of Musical Nostalgia”.
Playing to three sell-out audiences, the Melodians donated their share from the box-office receipts, while the Rotary Club raised a similar amount by conducting a special raffle.
The major prize-winner of a long-weekend at the Hyatt Hotel in Canberra was won by local painter and decorator, Daryl Neighbour.
Both the Melodians President, Ray Hosking and the Rotary President, Graeme Dunn, said that they were thrilled with the result of the joint venture. They were equally thrilled with the response from the Community to the concerts and the raffle and would like to express their thanks to everyone for their generosity and support.
Surf Club President Steve said, “This incredibly generous donation will go towards an up-grade of our lifesaving equipment that will include a second defibrillator and a PA system to be carried on our beach rescue ATV. Also, our beach signs are in need of refurbishing which we will now be able to get done.”
The series of three concerts were sold out well in advance and likewise, the raffle tickets were all sold several weeks beforehand.
Those lucky enough to acquire tickets to one of the performances were treated to a “Nostalgic” journey through all of the previous productions.
There were songs from the well known musicals, South Pacific, My Fair Lady, Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables followed by a selection from two Gilbert and Sullivan hits, Pirates of Penzance and HMS Pinafore.
After interval, the audience were taken on a trip around the world with popular songs from France, Ireland, Austria, England and USA.
The cast of around 50 Melodians were a joy to listen to and also turned in some hilarious comedy sketches.
They are a talented bunch and full credit goes to the Musical Director, Margaret Rowden and the whole production team.
